Kelp Forest Foundation appoints Roy Budjhawan as Managing Director
The Kelp Forest Foundation (KFF), a Netherlands-based non-profit dedicated to unlocking kelp as a nature-based solution for climate change, biodiversity, and social impact, is pleased to announce the appointment of Roy Budjhawan as its new Managing Director. Roy brings over three decades of experience across impact finance and banking. He will steer KFF through significant growth as kelp continues to gain global attention as a viable, scalable, and restorative solution to many of the challenges we face today.
In his previous role as Director of Impact Finance at ING, he established an organization providing loans, financial education, and research. His investments in the microfinance sector reached over 1 million entrepreneurs (80% women). His work in the ‘A Billion to Gain’ study, in collaboration with universities and knowledge centers, provided critical insights and in-depth knowledge of impact investing for end users.
In addition to his new role at Kelp Forest Foundation, Roy holds various board positions across Diversity & Inclusion, Art & Culture, and Impact Financing for a more inclusive society. He is also Chairman of the board of an Impact fund of EUR 150 million.
Currently, KFF is researching the value of ecosystem services provided by kelp, including its role in supporting marine biodiversity, carbon sequestration, water quality enhancement, and food stock support. KFF and its partners are also actively securing funding to advance kelp science and kelp forest restoration.
Caroline Slootweg, Chair of the KFF board:
“For the next phase of KFF’s growth, Roy brings the perfect balance between commercial acumen, a passion for the planet, and an incredible feel for humanity. His track record in leading through a networked approach fits incredibly well with what the Kelp Forest Foundation is striving to achieve.”
Budjhawan shares:
“Taking on the role of Managing Director at KFF is both a privilege and a responsibility. I am deeply committed to advancing our mission to protect and restore these vital ecosystems, which serve as natural carbon sinks, biodiversity havens, and strengthen communities. Together with our dedicated team and partners, I am eager to drive forward impactful solutions that not only safeguard our planet but inspire a sustainable future for generations to come.”
About The Kelp Forest Foundation
The Kelp Forest Foundation (KFF) is a Netherlands-based non-profit organization aimed at amplifying research initiatives and reforestation projects that unlock kelp as a nature-based solution. We envision a future whereby wild kelp forests are recovering and thriving, and farmed kelp provides nature-based solutions in our everyday lives. KFF does so by initiating kelp research projects, involving industry stakeholders, and supporting kelp reforestation projects worldwide. Next to these activities, we advance kelp science through open knowledge sharing and sponsoring capacity-building programs for coastal communities worldwide.
